CS 371g Summer 2020: Final Entry
How well do you think the course conveyed those takeaways?
I think the course conveyed all the takeaways thoroughly. Detailed examples are given in the lectures to help us grasp the major concepts and actual implementations. Many key points were brought up in multiple lectures to make sure that we can understand and use those helpful practices under different circumstances.
Were there any other particular takeaways for you?
A particular takeaway for me is to reuse code when there are similar logics in multiple functions or methods. Having my pieces of code that depends on each other can make the program easier to debug and has a clear structure.
How did you feel about two-stage quizzes and tests?
I thought the collaborative part was helpful since I can discuss questions and better implementations of the problems immediately after I had tried them myself. One thing I think could be improved it the amount of time given to the two stages of the tests. I felt that a little short on time in the individual part, and our group usually only use 20 minutes of the collaborative part. If some more time could be given in the individual part, we can have more time to come up with our solutions and just exchange ideas later.
How did you feel about cold calling?
It felt a bit intimidating at first, but now I am pretty comfortable with it. I think it is particularly beneficial since the class was given online. It helped me stay focused and engaged during the lectures. If there was anything that I was confused about, I could also just ask Professor Downing in class.
How did you feel about office hours?
Office hours were pretty helpful. Professor Downing and our TA are both very approachable and made me feel welcomed to ask any questions. They are patient and give helpful suggestions.
How did you feel about lab sessions?
The lab sessions felt like longer office hours that were meant for people to ask questions about projects which might take a while to answer. However, most of the time, they were just too close to the deadline for the projects. If it can be held at a different time, more students can use that time to get help. For the times I have been to the lab, our TA was helpful and answered all my questions.
